Esther could have sabotaged herself by acting harshly or unintelligently to avoid being chosen by the king, but instead she gave her best effort. God's favor was upon her, leading to her selection, which would have turned out very differently had she made poor choices.
The speaker draws a parallel to King David's story in 1st Samuel chapter 21, when David encountered the Philistines who remembered his great warrior accomplishments. Rather than face them as himself, David deliberately acted crazy as a strategic survival tactic.
